What airbrush tanning?
Airbrush tanning is done with a hand held airbrush that sprays a light mist of sunless tanning solution on the body that offers a flawless tan. The process is formulated to work with the body’s amino acids and proteins to darken the skin and then fade gradually over time. The solution is a sugar beet derivative and oxidizes the skin in much the same way that a peeled apple browns when exposed to the air. The active ingredient in the solution is DHA or dihydroxyacetone. It is derived from the center of the sugar beet which creates a natural looking tan just like the sun without damaging the skin making it completely safe and healthy. DHA has been around since the 1920’s and was approved by the FDA in the 70’s as completely safe for cosmetic use. It is not a dye. It is simple sugar and is non-toxic. The process takes anywhere from 10-12 hours to completely develop and can last an average of 5-10 days depending on your skin type and activities.
Sunless tanning has been around since the 1960’s when Copperton introduced QT quick tan. The industry has come a long way since the 60’s. Airbrush tanning has been around for several years it has been a well kept secret of celebrities for years. Since 1999 it has emerged into the market for the everyday tanner. The hand held version was developed to create a flawless tan. It is a lot safer tan exposing your self to the sun or tanning beds. It looks very natural. People with fair skin or those who are unable to tan at all through other conventional methods have had very positive results with spray tanning. You only need one session to become several shades darker. One application is equal to 5 tanning beds sessions, making spray tanning cost effective and no skin damage.
How often should I tan?
Since the body is constantly exfoliating itself on a daily basis it is recommended that you get re-sprayed every 8-10 days in order to maintain an even tan. Always exfoliate and remove any remnants of your prior tan. Note that getting sprayed more than once a week is not advised as the solution will build up and create blotchiness. Excessive spray tanning does not give you a darker tan.
Will I be protected from the sun?
NO! Not entirely. According to dermatologists, airbrush tanning only offers an SPF 4. It is recommended that a sunscreen or a sun block be used anytime you go out into the sun.
